Greatness Of Temple:

Vinayaka with Shiva name: As Lord Muruga appeared from the six sparks from Shiva, He is attributed with Shiva and Vinayaka with Shakthi as he was produced by her power. As Shiva and Shakthi are inseparable from each other, Vinayaka too is considered a form of Lord Shiva. Vinayaka in this temple also has the honour of the Easwara status and is being worshipped as Lord Shiva Himself. Lord Vinayaka here is worshipped in this temple as Aadhikumbeswarar.

Ekadasa Rudra Japam: Lord Brahmma assuming charge of Creation from Lord Shiva created 10 million lives. They were not mortals. Shiva told Brahmma that they became immortal as they were created when He was in penance and named them Rudras and made them assistants to Brahmma in his Creation job. Overwhelmed by the great honour bestowed on them the Rudras conducted a yagna chanting the great sacred mantras related to Shiva worship and this great puja is called Rudra Japam.

The chanting of these Ekadasa mantras begins on the Poosa Star day during the full moon days in the month of Aani (June-July) 11 Vedic Scholars chant this mantra 11 times for the puja (Ekam means One and Dasam 10 = Ekadasam means 11). Listening to these mantras cleanses the devotee from all his sins.

Swayambu Vinayaka: Vinayaka in the temple is not man made. Hence the form is not quite regular. As in all Shiva temple, there is Lord Vishnu behind Shiva, Brahmma on the left. Shiva appears in Linga shape in the five places he stood to protect Vinayaka during His penance. Some temples had appeared later here. It is noteworthy that there are no temples in between these temples and the Vinayaka Temple.

Temple History:

Devarishi Naradha called on Lord Shiva and Parvathi at Mount Kailash and offered a mango fruit. The divine parents were confused whom to give it, to Lord Vinayaka or Lord Subramanya. Hence they set a condition that the one who go round the world and return first would be eligible to get the fruit. Lord Subramanya immediately began the journey on his peacock vehicle. Lord Vinayaka simply went round the parents, according to the philosophy that parents signified the World and got the fruit. Lord Subramanya (Muruga) did not accept the theory and left angrily. He could not accept any compromise.

Lord Vinayaka felt that he ought to have yielded to His Brother. Unable to bear the separation from His brother, Vinayaka, despite the advice of the parents, insisted that He wanted to perform penance for offending the brother. Lord Shiva advised him to do in this place dense with Shenbaga trees. Lord Shiva, at the request of Mother Parvathi to protect the Son, came to this place and set Himself in five places representing the Panchabudas (water, fire, space, wind and earth). Lord Vinayaka came out from his penance as Swayambumurthy.
