A 23 year old female physiotherapy intern was beaten and gang raped in South Delhi, India on 16th December 2012, and died thirteen days later (29 December 2012) while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore for brain and gastrointestinal damage from the assault.

16 December 2012 :  The 23 year old female paramedical student and her male friend were on the way home after watching a movie in Saket , South Delhi.  Around 09.30 pm, they boarded a private chartered bus at Munirika after being told that it was enroute to their destination. Her male friend become suspicious when he noticed that the bus is deviated from the normal route with its doors shut. Noticing they were only other 6 passengers (perpetrators) , he objects the gang who already taunted the couple. He is later beaten , gagged and knocked unconscious with an iron rod.  The men then drag the women to the rear of the bus , beating her with the rod and took turns raping her while bus driver continues to drive around. As the female victim struggles to fight her way out, perpetrator Muhammad Afroz (aka Raju) inserted an iron rod into her and rips her intestines. Approximately 2 hours later, the couple were stripped and thrown off the bus. A passer by spots the couple and notifies Delhi police  and the couple get admitted at  Safdarjung Hospital.

 

 

17 December 2012 :  Delhi Police arrests the bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh Singh in Rajasthan. Vinay Sharma , an assistant gym instructor  is arrested in Delhi. Later they impound the bus (No.DL1PB0149).

18 December 2012:  The 4th accused Pawan Gupta , a fruit seller is also arrested in Delhi. Large numbers of people gather at India Gate to demand justice for the woman, battling for life.

19 December 2012: Doctors remove the victim’s intestines, susceptible to gangrene. Protests continue.

20 December 2012: The friend identifies one of the accused as the rapist in Tihar Jail.

21 December 2012: Police apprehends Muhammad Afroz aka Raju , a juvenile at Anand Vihar terminal in Delhi, identified as the 5th accused.  As the young woman’s condition worsens, hundreds, mostly women, take out a candle-light march outside 10 Janpath, the residence of Sonia Gandhi. Many women students and activists also try to enter Rashtrapati Bhavan.

21 December 2012: Police arrest Akshay Thakur , the 6th accused in Aurangabad , Bihar.

22 December 2012: Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde announces a commission to probe the gangrape. Protests spread as police shuts down Raisina Hill, the seat of power. Police use batons, water cannons and tear gas at crowds, which stays at India Gate till late at night, some through the night. Some metro stations shut down. Government sets up inquiry to suggest ways to enhance women’s safety in Delhi.

23 December 2012: The heart of the Indian capital turns into a battle zone as thousands denounce the gangrape. Clashes between police and protesters leave many injured. Constable Subhash Chand Tomar collapses at India Gate. Metro station remain shut. The victim is on ventilator, her condition remains critical.

24 December 2012: Two Delhi Police officers suspended for not stopping the bus with tinted windows in which the girl was raped. Roads again blocked as protests continue. Authorities promise more measures for security of women. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addresses the nation, calls for calm. As a tribute to the victim, he cancelled all his official new year celebrating events.

25 December 2012: During a public protest, a policeman named Subhash Tomar collapsed and later died in hospital due to Cardiac arrest of  his injuries.

26 December 2012: At the decision of a  cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Gangrape victim is flown and relocated to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. Government asks a Delhi high court judge to probe the gangrape and police lapses and suggest ways to make the national capital safer for women.

27 December 2012:  The Union Parliament’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs meets to discuss the issue, and Union Home Secretary R. K. Singh and Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar were summoned to appear.

28  December 2012: Sonia Gandhi joins Prime Minister Manmohan Singh promise quick justice. Back in Singapore, the young woman’s condition worsens.

29  December 2012: Around 2.15 am IST (845 pm UTC , 28 December 2012) , the 23 year old female victim dies in Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. The victim, who underwent three surgeries, had damaged internal organs in the assault. She also suffered a cardiac arrest and brain injury.

30  December 2012:  At around 12:30 a.m. local time (10:00 p.m. IST Saturday) an Indian Goverment Charted plane AIC-380A carrying the 23 year old female victim’s body, took off from Singapore and landed at IGI Airport, Delhi around 3.30 am IST. Sonia Gandhi and President Manmohan Singh met the disconsolate parents and brothers of the paramedical student and commiserated in their grief. Amidst heavy deployment of Delhi Police, BSF and Rapid Action Force personnel in riot gear, the body was then taken to the victims house where the hindu ceremonial rituals were performed before being taken to the crematorium at Dwarka Sector 24.

    Its now up to the legal system to punish them in a manner fitting! They including the minor should suffer soo much they need to atone and beg god and jyothi for forgiveness. Then HANG them! If this is not done India should be isolated from the world. Other countries have crime but india has barbarians. Less of da bollywood shit respect n fake innocence n more of helping their woman.. Hate india! Soo fake n pretencious n yet soo barbaric.
