Pallavi

ఎవరని నిర్ణయించిరిరా నిన్ం-
ఎట్లారాధించిరిరా 1నర వరుల్(ఎవరని)

Anupallavi

శివుడనో మాధవుడనో 2కమల
భవుడనో పర-బ్రహ్మమనో నిన్న్(ఎవరని)

Charanam

శివ మంత్రమునకు 3మ జీవము
మాధవ మంత్రమునకు రా జీవముయీ
వివరము తెలిసిన ఘనులకు మ్రొక్కెద
వితరణ గుణ 4త్యాగరాజ వినుత (ఎవరని)

Variations

1నర వరు(లెవరని) – నర వరు (ఎవరని) – నర వర (ఎవరని). If ‘నర వరు’ is correct, then it could be connected to Pallavi. If ‘నర వర’ is correct, then it should be treated as an epithet of Lord and cannot be connected to Pallavi.
It is stated that Gopalakrishna Bharati (Tamil composer) – a contemporary of Tyagaraja visted latter and sang a song (Sabhapatikku) eulogising Lord Siva – that there is no God equal to Lord Siva. It is stated that then and there, Sri Tyagaraja extempore composed this song. If this is true, then ‘నర వరులు ఎవరని’ would be the correct rendering.
2కమల భవుడు – కమలా భవుడు : As the word here means ‘lOtus’, ‘కమల’ is appropriate (కమలా – లక్ష్మీ).
3మ జీవనము – మా జీవము : From the discourse referred below, it is clear that the (second) syllable of ‘నమశ్శివాయ’ is referred – ie ‘మ’ and not ‘మా’. Similarly, ‘రా’ is the second syllable of ‘నారాయణాయ’; there ‘రా జీవము’ is correct.
4త్యాగరాజ వినుత – త్యాగరాజ వినుత నిన్ను

What did the most eminent people determine as to who You are? And, how did they worship You?

What did the most Eminent people determine as to who You are – whether Lord Siva or Lord Vishnu or Brahma – One seated in Lotus or the Supreme Lord? And, how did they worship You?

Charanam

For the Siva mantra – ‘ma’ is the soul; for the Vishnu mantra – ‘rA’ is the soul; I salute these great personages who understand this detail; O Munificient Lord, praised by this Tyagaraja! What did the most eminent people determine as to who You are? And, how did they worship You?
