His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. జయన్తి తే సుకృతినో |
రససిద్ధాః కవీశ్వరాః ||
నాస్తి తేషాం యశః కాయే |
జరామరణజం భయమ్ ||
తాత్పర్యం:
సిద్ధౌషధ సేవవల్ల ముసలితనాన్ని – మరణాన్ని సైతం అతిక్రమించవచ్చు ! అయితే – అది ఇట్టి ఔషధం యోగులకు మాత్రమే అందుబాటులో ఉండి, వారే సేవించగలుగుతారు. విద్వాంసులైన వారికి ‘ కీర్తి ‘ రూపంలో మరణానంతరం కూడ జీవం ఉండి, సిద్ధౌషధంలా వార్ని జీవింపచేస్తుంది. ఇటువంటి ధన్య జీవులు ఎవరు ? కవులు – పండితులు విరు సద్ధౌషధం సేవించిన యోగులవంటివారు.

ఆ కవులకు – పండితులకు అంతటి ఘనకీర్తి ఎలా లభిస్తుంది ? ఆయా రసాలకు అనుగుణంగా, ఆ నవరసాలకు తమకావ్యాలలో సిద్దింపచేయడం ద్వారా. ఇంతటి ఘనులైన కవులు – పండితుల మైత్రిని పొందగలగడం సైద్ధౌషధంతో సమానం కదా !
