His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. లభేత సికతాసు తైలమపి యత్నతః పీడయ |
పిబేచ్చ మృగతృష్ణి కాసు సలిలం పిపాసార్దితః ||
కదాచిదపి పర్యట శశవిషాణమాసాదయే |
న్నతు ప్రతివిష్టమూర్ఖజనచిత్తమారాధయేత్ ||
తాత్పర్యం:
ఎంతో ప్రయత్నించి ఇసుక నుంచి చమురును పిండవచ్చు ! ( నిజానికిదీ అసాధ్యమైన చర్యే అయినప్పటికీ ) ఎండమావులలో తిరిగి తిరిగి ఏదోలా నీరు సంపాధించవచ్చు ! అలాగే లేనట్టి కుందేటి కొమ్మునైనా సాధించవచ్చు ! కాని…. మహా కోపిష్టి అయిన మూర్ఖుని మనస్సును ఆ క్రోధం నుంచి మరపించాలని చూడడం మాత్రం అసాధ్యం !
అంటే… అసాధ్యాలనైనా సాధ్యం చేయవచ్చు గాని, మూర్ఖుని మెప్పించడం అసాధ్యం అని అర్థం..

Labhetha Sikathaasu Thailamapi Yathnathah Peedaya |
Pibechcha Mrugathrushni Kaasu Salilam Pipaasaardhithah ||
Kadhaachidhapi Paryata Shashavishaanamaasaadhaye |
Nnathu Prathivishtamoorkhajanachiththamaaraadhayeth ||
Meaning:
One can extract oil from sand with utmost effort. One can find water in a mirage. One can somehow get the horn of a rabbit. But it is impossible to pacify the foul mind of an angry vain person. It means one can make impossible things possible, but not make an unreasonably angry man happy.
