His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. పద్యం:
నమస్యామో దేవా, న్నను హతవిధేస్తే పి వశగా,
విది ర్వన్ద్యః, సో పి ప్రతినియతకర్శైకఫలదః |
ఫలం కర్మాయుత్తం, కి మమరగుణైః ? కించ విధినా ?
సమప్త త్కర్మభ్యో, విధిరపి న యేభః ప్రభవతి ||
తాత్పర్యం:
కనుకనే, కర్మాచరణం శ్రేష్ఠమని భగవానుడే స్వయంగా చెప్పివున్నాడు ( భగవద్గీత ) అంచేత ఆ దేవతలంతా విధికి లోబడినందున విధి అనే దైవానికే నమస్కారం.

ఆ దైవం కూడా కర్మానుసారంగా ఫలితం ఇస్తున్నాడు. కాబట్టి …. ఇక దేవతలతోను – దైవంతోను మాకేం పని ? అటువంటి వారే దాటశక్యం గాని ఆ కర్మకే నమస్కరిస్తాము.

ఇట్లా ఒకరికంటే ఒకరు అధికులని చెప్తూ, చివరకి కర్మ బలీయమైందని – దానికే మ్రొక్కుతామనీ వ్యంగ్యంగా చెప్పాడు.

Namasyaamo dhevaa, nnanu hathavidhesthe pi vashagaa,
vidhi rvandhyah, so pi prathiniyathakarshaikaphaladhah |
phalam karmaayuththam, ki mamaragunaih ? Kimcha vidhinaa ?
Samaptha thkarmabhyo, vidhirapi na yebhah prabhavathi ||
Meaning:
The Lord Krishna said himself, that it is Karma that is the greatest o f all. So one should bow to Karma than to the Gods (The poet uses this poem as an ironical concept)
