Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia (Hindi: पंडित हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया ) is an internationally renowned world class flutist from India. He is credited with popularising Indian Classical music in India and abroad through various experiments and innovations he made with the traditional music.

Early life:
Hariprasad Chaurasia was born on 1st July, 1938 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. His father was a famous wrestler and had anspirations for his son to carry forward the legacy. His mother died when he was 6. The younger Chaurasia had an early love of music, however, and by the age of 15 was taking his first steps toward a lifetime as a performer by studying classical vocal with Pandit Raja Ram of Varanasi.
Career:
Hariprasad Chaurasi began learning classical vocal music from Pandit Rajaram at the age of 15. Within a year, he switched to flute-playing after hearing Pandit Bholanath, a noted flautist from Varanasi on Radio. He tutored under Pandit Bholanath for eight years and in 1957, moved to Orissa where he became a staff artiste working as a performer and composer for All India Radio in Cuttack, Orissa. He met his wife of 39 years, Anuradha an established singer, there. Later he was transferred to All India Radio, Mumbai. There he met renowned Surbahar player Annapurna Devi his ‘Guruma’ and trained under her. She is the daughter of late Ustad Allauddin Khan and sister of famous Sarod player Ali Akbar Khan. He left All India Radio to pursue a career as a flutist and from then on there has been no looking back for him. He travels around the world giving concerts residing in Holland for almost half a year and making it a point to be at home in Mumbai, India for his 24-hour recital on the ‘Janmashtami’ day (Lord Krishna’s birthday). He has performed with greats like Yehudi Menuhin, John McLaughlin and Jean Pierre Rampal and as a part of his experimentation, he has tried pop, jazz, rock, western classical fusions with the traditional Indian music. He has also released many albums of his compositions and done film music with his friend and Santoor exponent Pandit Shivkumar Sharma for films like ‘Silsila’, ‘Darr’ and others earning mass appeal.
He has collaborated with several western musicians, including John McLaughlin and Jan Gabarek, and has also composed music for a number of Indian films. He has performed throughout the world winning acclaim from varied audiences and fellow musicians including Yehudi Menuhin and Jean Pierre Rampal.
Awards:
- In 1984, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to music, he received the National Award of the Sangeet Natak Academy. In 1990, he was awarded the ‘Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar’.
- In 1992, received ‘Padma Bhushan’ and the ‘Konarak Samman’ by the Orissa state government.
- In 1994, he was bestowed the ‘Yash Bharati Sanman’ by Uttar Paradesh government. This immensely popular humble artiste also gives training to several dedicated students.
- In 2000, received Padma Bhushan.

- In 2008, The Art & Music Foundation of Pune, India felicted him Pune Pandit Award.

- In 2009, Pt. Chaurasia was awarded the National Eminence award, Nada Vidya Bharati by Visakha Music and Dance Academy, Vizag, Andhra Pradesh.
Honours:
- On 1 July, 2008 on the occasion of his 70th Birthday, his official biography “Woodwinds of Change” by Shri Surjit Singh was released by none other than Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Soon after, Panditji was honoured by the Dutch Royal family at a glittering ceremony at Amsterdam. He was conferred the title OFFICER IN THE ORDER OF ORANGE-NASSAU( “officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau”) and was honored by Princess Maxima herself. Pt. Chaurasia has been teaching Indian music at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory for the past 15 years. He is the Artistic Director of the Indian Music department.
- This year shortly after his 71st Birthday he was honored by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of France. He has been appointed as KNIGHT IN THE ORDER OF ARTS AND LETTER (“Ordres des Arts et Lettres”) in appreciation for the significant contribution he has made to spread culture in France and the rest of the World.
- In 2009, Pt, Hariprasad Chauasia received Honorary Doctorate by the North Orissa University for his unparalleled role and contribution to the world of Indian Classical Music.
