His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. ప్రారభ్యతే న ఖలు విఘ్నభయేన నీచ, ఐః
ప్రారభ్య విఘ్ననిహతా విరమన్తి మధ్యాః |
విఘ్నై ర్ముహుర్ముహ్ రపి ప్రతిహన్యమానాః
ప్రారాబ్ధ ముత్తమగుణా న పరిత్యజన్తి ||
తాత్పర్యం:
కార్యసాథకులు ధైర్యబేదం చేత 3 రకాలుగా ఉంటారు. ధీరులయినవారు ఎన్ని విఘ్నాలు ఎన్ని రకాలుగా కలిగినప్పటికీ – చేపట్టిన కార్యాన్ని వదలరు. వీరు ఉత్తములు. ఇక మధ్యములు కార్యసాధన పట్ల గట్టిపూనికతోనే ఆరంభించినప్పటికీ, ఏవైనా ఆటంకాలు ఎదురైతే మధయ్లోనే వదిలేస్తారు. అధములు విఘ్నాలకు వెఱచి అసలు కార్యమునే ఆరంభించరు.

Praaraabdha Muththamagunaa Na Parithyajanthi ||
Meaning:
The courage and tenacity varies between the 3 classes of people – Great men do not give up on their goals in spite many hurdles and difficulties. An average man starts with conviction, but gives up when facing with hurdles. A will-less man doesn’t start any great work with conviction.
