His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. ప్రియా న్యాయ్యా వృత్తి ర్మలినమసుభఙ్గే ప్యసుకరం
త్వపన్తో నాభ్యర్థ్యాః, సుహృదపి న యాచ్యః కృశధనః |
విప ద్యుచ్చైర్ధైర్యం, పదమనువిధేయం చ మహతాం
సతాం కేనోద్దిష్టం విషమ మసిధారావ్రత మిదమ్ ? ||
తాత్పర్యం:
అన్యాయమైనట్టిదేదీ దరిచేరనివ్వరు. తమకు నిజంగా ప్రాణాపాయమే సంభవించేటప్పటికి అకార్యాలకు పాల్పడరు. ఎంత కష్టం ఎదురైనప్పటికీ దుర్జనులకు సాయం అడగరు. తనకు ఎంత ప్రాణమిత్రుడైనా, ధనహీనుడై తాను అలమటిస్తున్న వేళ చేయిచాచి యాచించరు. ఎంతటి విపత్తు సంభవించినా ధైర్యాన్ని వీడరు. ఎట్టి స్థితిలోనూ గొప్పవారినే అనుసరిస్తారు గాని నీచులను ఆదర్శంగా తీసుకోరు. ఈ అసిధారావ్రతమనేది వారికి సహజంగానే వచ్చింది తప్ప ఇతరుల ఉపదేశాలతో మాత్రం రాలేదు.

Priyaa nyaayyaa vruththi rmalinamasubhagge pyasukaram
thvapantho naabhyarthyaah, suhrudhapi na yaachyah krushadhanah |
vipa dhyuchchairdhairyam, padhamanuvidheyam cha mahathaam
sathaam kenodhdhishtam vishama masidhaaraavratha midham ? ||
Meaning:
A virtuous man doesn’t entertain unfair things. At the face of danger too, they refrain from doing harmful acts. They do not seek help of a wicked man even in a very unfortunate state. They do not seek alms even from a close friend. They will not lose courage in any situation. They do not follow a wicked man in any extreme situation. This behavior comes natural to them.
