Salma Agha (Urdu: سلمہ آغا born October 25, 1965) is a singer and actress from Pakistan who sang and acted in Indian films & Pakistani films in 1980s and early 1990s. Her first film was B.R. Chopra’s Nikaah. She won the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award in 1982 for the song “Dil ke Armaan” in Nikaah.
Salma Agha is the grand daughter of Rafiq Ghaznawi and Anwar Begum who played roles in first ever made Heer Ranjha (1932). Her father Liaquat Gul Agha had a huge business of Persian carpets and antiques in Switzerland. Her mother, Nasreen born to a star pair bagged the lead role with K. L. Saigal in A.K. Kardar’s ‘Shahjahan'(1946), a prized role of those times and Aik Roz (1947). Salma studied in London and for further studies went to Switzerland.
Salma along with sister Sabina produced and sang for a record called AGHA – Salma and Sabina Agha sing ABBA hits in Urdu. The record made a few waves but it didn’t create any major ripples in the industry.
Agha started her career with the Indian movie Nikaah. The movie went on to be a huge success and is considered a classic. Agha earned a Filmfare nomination for best actress. In addition to winning the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for the song “Dil Ke Armaan,” she also earned two Filmfare nominations: one for the song “Pyar Bhi Hai Jawan” and the other for the song “Dil Ki Yeh Arzo”.
After Nikaah’s success Agha signed on to B. Subhash’s Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki with Mithun Chakraborty and Smita Patil. The movie was publicised with huge pictures of Salma Agha and this movie became Salma’s second release and another hit. She earned a Filmfare nomination for the song “Jhoom Jhoom Baba.”
Agha also did a Pakistani film called Bazaar-e-husn which was the first in Pakistan to have won awards in Russia. Her performance was outstanding and as a result it was remade in India by Raj Kumar Kholi called “Pati Patni Aur Tawaiaf” starring Salma Agha, Mithun Chakraborty and Farah Naaz and Agha once again got to play the same role. The music was again a hit by lakshmikant piyare lal. Salma kept going strong with her music, looks and popularity which lead to a title role called ‘Salma’ by Ramanan Sagar starring Raj Babbar Salma Agha Farooq sheikh Shoma Anand.
Salma also did Oonche Log.. aka ‘High Society’ with Rajesh Khanna Music by R.D Burman where her song with Kishore Kumar was a great hit. The song was called ‘Jhin Jhin Tara’. Salma Agha did a few music concerts in her lifetime, Pakistani movies after her career ended in India.
During her Peak time in the industry Salma had her share of romance off screen, she was engaged to multi billionaire tycon of shipping industry M.Sipra but broke it off later on. Romours were heard of her and Javed Sheikh which soon died down with the news of her marriage to a well known name in the sports world Rahmat Khana squash player who was cousin and coach of Jahangir Khan. Salma And Rahmat settled in London and had two kids,a girl and a boy and then moved back to India.
