His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. శాస్త్రోపస్కృతశబ్దసున్దరగిరః శిష్యప్రదేయాగమా |
విఖ్యాతాః కవయో వసన్తి విషయే యస్య ప్రభోర్నర్ధనాః |
తజ్జాడ్యం వసుధాధిపస్య సుధియ స్త్వర్థం వినాపీశ్వరా |
కుత్స్యాః స్యుః కుపరీక్షకైర్న మణయోయైరర్ఘతః పాతితాః ||
తాత్పర్యం:
సాధారణంగా విద్వాంసులు, ఏ మహారాజునో ఆశ్రయించి తమ పాండిత్యాన్ని ప్రదర్శించి ఆ ప్రభువు చేత భూరి సమ్మానాలను అందుకుంటారు. వారికి సంపదకు లోటు అన్నదే ఉండదు.

కాని, తర్కవ్యాకరణ మీమాంసాది శాస్త్రాలలో పండితులై వుండి వాటిని అలవోకగా విద్యార్థులకు బోధించే నెర్పు ఉండి సుప్రసిద్ధులని పేరు పొంది కూడా పండితులు ఏ ప్రభువు దగ్గరైనా ఏమీ పొందలేకపోతే అది వారి వుంటుందంటే రత్నాలకు విలువకట్టడం చేతగానట్టి వర్తకుని దగ్గర అమూల్యమైన రత్నాలున్నా, వాటికి సరైన వెలకట్టలేకపోయినా ఆ లోపం ఆ రత్నవర్తకునిదే గాని రత్నాలది కాదుగదా!

రత్నాల్లాంటి పండితులు తన చెంతనే ఉన్నా, వారి విలువ తెలీని రాజును పండితులు ఆశ్రయిస్తే ప్రయోజనం సిద్ధించదని కవి అన్యాపదేశంగా చెపుతున్నాడు.

Meaning:
A wise man an earn a good living under a king by displaying his knowledge and wisdom. But If a great scholar cfails to make a good living at a king, inspite of knowledge in various subjects, it is only because the king doesn’t know the worth of his subjects. It is like a gem merchant not realizing the value of the precious stones he has.
