Composer: Bhartruhari a King of Ujjain, Bhartruhari was the elder step brother of his more renowned sibling, Vikramaditya. His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. పద్యం:
శిరశ్వార్వం స్వర్గాత్పశుపతిశిర స్తః క్షితిధరం |
మహీధ్రాదుత్తుఙ్గాదవనిమవనేశ్చాపి జలధిం ||
అధో గఙ్గా నేయం పదముపగతా స్తోక మథవా |
వివేకభ్రష్టానాం భవతి వినిపాతః శతముఖః || తాత్పర్యం:
ఎంతో గొప్పవారమని విర్రవీగే వారి పతనం ఏ రీతిలో ఉంటుందో చెప్పడానికి కవి ఇక్కడ గంగా ప్రవాహాన్ని ఉదాహరణగా ఆశ్రయించాడు. ఇది పవిత్రమైన గంగా భవానిని కిమ్చపరిచేందుకు స్వీకరించలేదు. గొప్ప స్థితిలోంచి తొలగే పరిస్థితివస్తే, ఆపతనం ఎటు దారి తీస్తుందో చెప్పనలవి కాదన్నదే ఇక్కడ గ్రహించాల్సిన అంశం.
మొదట శివుని శిరస్సు మీదనే నిల్చి అత్యంత ఉన్నత స్థానంలో ఉన్న గంగ, పర్వతాల మీదుగా భూమ్మీదకు అంతకంటే అధో లోకమైన పాతాళానికి పయనించింది కదా !

The poet uses the flow of river Ganga as a metaphor to the doom of half knowledged vain people. (This comparision was not to speak derogatively about the sacred river Ganges, just a metopher to show the importance of position)
The ruin of a vain man is like the flow f River Ganges that starts at the greatest point of Shiva’s head, to the lofty mountains of Himalayas, then to the land of earth and finally into the deep hades(patalam)…from the utmost respectable position to the lowest hades.
