Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. శ్రోత్రం శ్రుతేనైవ న కుణ్డలేన |
దానేన పాణిర్నతు కఙ్కణేన |
విభాతి కాయః కరుణాపరాణాం |
పరోపకారేణ న చన్డనేన ||
తాత్పర్యం:
దయాపరులైన సజ్జనులకు అలంకారం అనదగినవి శాస్త్రవచనాలు వినడమె గాని, కుండలాలు కానేకావు. సత్పాత్రులకు దానం ఇవ్వడమనే చర్య ఒక్కటే వారి చేతులకు ఆభరణం వలె ఒప్పుతుంది గాని కంకణధారణ కాదు. పరులకు ఉపకారం చేయడమే ఇట్టి సత్పురుషుల దేహం మొత్తానికి అలంకారమై భాసిస్తుంది గాని, గంధం పూసుకోవడమ్ కాదు.

Meaning:
It is not rings, but listening to good words, that is the real adornment to their ears; it is not bracelets, but giving help to deserving people, that is the real adornment to their hands; It is not applying sandal wood, but the nature of giving that is the real ornament to their whole body.
