Prayers

The ‘Annakkodi’ festival is celebrated here on the Tiruvonam star day of the month Aavani. On that day, the Utsavar (Procession Deity) is brought to the front mandapam of the Lord’s sanctum and before him the cooked rice is heaped and offered to him. The cooked rice is then distributed as ‘prasaadam’. During this festival the Lord is dressed as ‘Govardanan’, the Lord holding up the Govaradana Giri. The practice is, the devotees light the ghee-lamp in front of the sanctum either on the ground or on the wooden plank laid there. But, those who have planetary affliction in their horoscopes, worship Alarmelmanga Thaayaar by spreading paddy in the sanctum and light the ghee-lamp over it – thereby the affliction gets relieved is the belief. Thaayaar in this sacred place is powerful and grants boons. Those with marriage impediments and issueless couples pray to her most.

Thanks giving:

Those who reap the benefit of their prayers, as offering perform ‘thirumanjanam’ (Holy Bath) to Thaayaar.

Greatness Of Temple:

In the prime sanctum, Lord Prasanna Venkatesar appears in standing posture along with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Near the feet of the Prime Deity is Nrsimhar without lion-face and appears as He is with calm countenance. He is hence called ‘Azhakiya Singar’. The pooja is performed to Him after the pooja is done to Venkatesar. The Lord of the Parthasarathy Swamy temple at Tiruvallikeni appears with His face full of scars. Similarly, in this temple the Thaayaar’s face has scars. When the sanctum was erected for Lord Prasanna Venkatesar in this temple, there was an anthill in the place where now is Thaayaar’s sanctum. The devotees who found the image of Thaayaar inside the anthill, consecrated the image here itself, erected a sanctum and installed a stone image to Thaayaar. Since She came out of the sanddune, She appears with scars on Her face. On the Panguni Uthiram day, the Lord comes to Her sanctum and marries her.

In the front mandapam of the temple is the south-facing sanctum of Lord Rama. The Prime deity Rama, appears in his wedlock mode with Sita on his right side and Lakshmana on his left. The Utsavar is in the ‘Pattabhishekam’ appearance with Lakshmana on the right and Sita on the left sides. Two different appearances of Lord Rama could be worshipped here simultaneously. During the Punarpoosam star days, Lord Rama gets special abhishekams and goes in procession in the inner praakaaram. The Rama Navami festival is celebrated for 10 days to him. On that day also special abhishekam and pooja are performed. Before his sanctum is Aajaneyar in a small sanctum. This sacred place was called ‘Raghunathapuram’ because there was only the temple of Rama – ‘Raghu’ denotes Rama. Parthasarathy Swamy on a day in the month of Thai and Lord Aadi Kesavar of Mylapore on a day in the Aani month make a visit to this temple. Senai Mudaliyaar, Nammalvar, Tirumangai Alvar, Ramanujar and Manavaala Maamunigal are seen in the front mandapam. The sanctum of Chakrathaalvaar is in the praakaaram.

Temple History:

Many years ago, in the small temple of this holy place was only the sanctum of Kothanda Ramar. In the dream of a devotee who was regularly worshipping Lord Rama appeared Lord Venkatesa and directed him to erect a temple for Him. Accordingly, a temple was erected later. Since the Lord ‘appeared’ (‘prasannam’ means ‘to appear’) in the devotee’s dream and then the temple was erected, the Lord was named ‘Prasanna Venkatesar’. When the Lord’s image was consecrated, the image of ‘Azhagiya Singar’ was also installed in the prime sanctum. Hence the temple came to be known as “Prasanna Venkatesa Narasimha Perumal’ temple.
