His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. వరం ప్రాణోచ్ఛేదః సమదమఘువన్ముక్తకులిశ
ప్రహారైరుద్గచ్ఛద్భహులదహనోద్గారగురుభిః |
తుషారాద్రేః సూనోరహహ ! పితరి క్లేశవివ శే
న చాసౌ సంపాతః పయసి పయసాం పత్యురుచితః ||
తాత్పర్యం:
హిమంతుని కుమారుడు మైనాకుడు. ఒకప్పుడు దేవేంద్రుడు క్రోధము పూని వజ్రాయుధంతో పర్వతాలన్నిటికీ ఉన్న రెక్కల్ని తరుగుతూ రాగా, అతని అతిశయానికి హిమవత్పర్యత రాజే మూర్చపోయాడు. అట్టి దుస్థితిలో తండ్రిని వదిలిపెట్టి, తన ప్రాణాలను రక్షించుకోవడం కోసం సముద్రంలోనికి జొరబడి అందులో దాగాడు మైనాకుడు. అది మాన శౌర్యవంతుల లక్షణం కాదు. పిరికి తనానికి పరాకాష్ఠ అని నిందిస్తున్నాడు కవి.

Varam praanochchedhah samadhamaghuvanmukthakulisha
prahaarairudhgachchadhbhahuladhahanodhgaaragurubhih |
thushaaraadhreh soonorahaha ! Pithari kleshaviva she
na chaasau sampaathah payasi payasaam pathyuruchithah ||
Meaning:
When the King of Gods, Indra used his vajraayudha to cut the wings of the mountains in his anger, the great Himavanth (King of Himalayas) fainted. Frightened by his father’s plight, his son mainaka fled and hid in the waters of the ocean. And thus became an object of laughter among others. Hence unless a man shows self respect and courage, he will not gain name among his people.
