Composer: Bhartruhari a King of Ujjain, Bhartruhari was the elder step brother of his more renowned sibling, Vikramaditya. His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. పద్యం:
యః ప్రీణయే త్సుచరితైః పితరం స పుత్త్రో,
య ద్భర్తు రేవ హిత మిచ్ఛతి తత్కళత్రం |
తన్మిత్ర మాపది సుఖే చ సమక్రి యం య,
దేతత్ త్రయం జగతి పుణ్యకృతో లభన్తే ||
తాత్పర్యం:
తనయొక్క మంచి ప్రవర్తన చేత తండ్రిని సంతోషపరచడానికే ఉత్తముడైన పుత్రుడు. అన్ని వేళలా పతి భక్తి చేత భర్త హితాన్ని మాత్రమే కోరేది సద్భార్య. కలిమిలేములతో నిమిత్తం లేక ఎల్లవేళలా తోడుగా నిలిచే వాడే మిత్ర పదానికి అర్హుడు. ఎంతో పుణ్యాత్ములకు గాని ఇట్టివారు లభించరు.

Meaning:
A virtuous son is one who makes his parents happy with his behavior; a virtuous wife is one who always wishes the good of her husband; a virtuous friend is one who stands by in prosperity and poverty – it is one’s good destiny to be able to get such relations.
