Kanadi Kavu is the most holy and ancient Vishnu Maya Temple in the state of Kerala providing relief to sorrows and showering blessings and prosperity to all the devotees irrespective of caste, creed or religion. This temple having many epics and with rare his torical importance is situated 20 kilometers south-west of Trichur in Peringottukkara. Sri K. K. Vishnubharatheeya Swamy who is the Spiritual Guru and the Madathipathi of Kanadi Kavu, grew up with the traditional values inherited and imbibed into him by the great hermit Sri Konnachariyan. The all merciful and sympathetic Swamiji observes the temple rites strictly, and leads his life as a ritualist.

The important epic goes like this. A son was born to Shakatha Maharishi named Vishwakethu who had a very wild character. Ped up with his notorious attitude, the father drove his son away from his Ashram. One day when he was sleeping under a tree in a thick forest Keyoori, the daughter of Vigalasuran, kept his feet on her lap and was pampering and they started to live in the forest. Hearing this news, Vigalasuran ordered that the man should be brought in front of I him but the soldiers could not trace him and instead they caught Keyoori, and then Vigalasuran put her in jail. According to the warning given by Sukrachariyan, that Keyoori is carrying a baby in her abdomen, and that baby is the destroyer of Asurra vamsham, Vigalasuran abandoned her in the forest. Keyoori who was wandering in the forest got very tired and feeble, approached an Ashram for water. The Ashram belonged to Shakatha Maharishi and the sage who has spiritual insight about things to happen, immediately recognized who the baby is, that is growing in the womb of Keyoori. He then conducted a Homam in order to eradicate Keyoori from this earth and he created a demon. This demon dashed towards Keyoori to swallow her, but declined back, seeing the uniqueness of the infant in her abdomen. Instead the demon created a beetle and sent it into her womb. Immediately she experienced pain and delivered a boy baby. Upon this incident, immediately the demon swallowed Keyoori and also murdered Vishwakethu. The baby was found holding a smashed fierce beetle in his hands by a hunter in the jungle and he took the baby to his hut and named him Bhrigan. The lone spirits of Vishwakethu and Keyoori wandered in the jungle and everyday they used to visit the hut of the hunter to see and fondle their baby. Later when the baby grew up to be a boy, he decided to take revenge on those who have killed his parents. As per the instructions from his parents he went to Brahmagiri to do penance to please Brahma. Lord Brahma appeared before him, and he prayed to bless him with a wish, that if he has death, it should be by a seven year old boy who is born out of the sperm of Lord Shiva and who has grown up by having the breast milk of a virgin of Chandala caste and he should have life on both sides of his chest. Obliging to the prayers of Bhrigan, Lord Brahma granted his wishes and also presented him with ten divine arrows and Brahma disappeared. Bhrigan killed all those who murdered his parents. Shakatha Maharishi fled with fear and hid in a cave. There he observed severe penance and pleased Lord Vishnu who appeared before him and promised that he will fmd a solution to the problem. He then called a meeting of the Deva Sabha, there Naradhamaharishi stood up and announced that a yakshi named Manaswani due to the curse of Parvathi devi is living in Kulikunnan forests as the daughter of Malayaraja and since time has come for the murder of Bhrigassura and for the release of the curse on Manaswani Lord Shiva and Parvathi Devi should immediately reach Kulikunnan forests. Lord Shiva taking the form of a jungle hunter and Parvathi as Kulivaga rushed to earth. After reaching earth, Lord Shiva went to the shore of a stream to have bath, there he saw a beautiful woman having bath and got aroused. The lord immediately informed the woman about his feelings but hearing this, the woman got scared and prayed to Parvathi Devi. Immediately the woman felt that some sort of a power had imbibed into her body and as a dream she felt that she is having sexual intercourse with a jungle tribe. The sperm of the Jungle tribe fell on a wild root (a kind of yam grown in the forest) on earth. The woman {elt all these as a ~eam but she could not see neither the jungle tribe nor anybody in the vicinity. After this incident, the woman grew anxious to fondle a baby and she felt that on the shore of the stream there is a wild root having life, and she also felt that it was calling out to her “mother..mother..”. And that night, she walked to the shore of the stream and was surprised to see another woman typically looking like her. She saw the wild root which she wished in that woman’s hands. She then meditated Sree Parameshwaran, and then lifted her hands forward to get the wild root, suddenly the other woman transformed herself to Parvathi and the root she was holding became a very handsome baby. This is how Sree Chathan Swamy took his form on earth. Parvathi Devi gave the baby to the woman telling her that this baby has nothing impossible to do and the baby should be breast fed and brought up. Thereafter blessing both .of them Parvathi Devi vanished from the scene. The baby grew big and smart by drinking the breast milk of the virgin women. The boy attacked and brought into his control a bison which was troubling everybody and was destroying everything in the forest. He used the bison as his vehicle and was roaming in the jungle enjoying the beauty of the forest and while he was roaming, Naradamuni appeared before him and reminded him of his intentions on earth, such as eradication of Bhrigassuran and establishing peace on earth, saying this, Naradamuni disappeared. Chathan later went to Kailas to visit his father in the form of Vishnu and there Lord Shiva said that he will be known as Vishnu Maya and gave advice regarding various mantbras. Parvathi Devi also trained him with various techniques and with these techniques he murdered Bhrigasuran who was trying to own his step-mother Kulivaga. After the murder of BhrigaSuran, Parvathi and Kulivaga blessed Chathan Swamy in abundance. They said that a devotee will come to the forest and Chathan Swamy should go along with him to the country and should reign there as their leader and protector and both the powers together took fist full of rice, blessed it and gave it to 390 Kutti chathans and sent them along with Chathan Swamy.
