General Information:
In Sanskrit, the place is known as Kukshi. Due to changes in the days followed, it became Kukhi and came to stay. There are 113 Shiva temples around this place. 9 pujas are performed in the temple each day. The Gopuja (cow worship), Midday (uchikala) puja and the Sayaraksha (evening) pujas are performed by Kerala Tantriks while the other pujas are performed by the priests of the temple.
Prayers:
This is the place where Lord Muruga gave asylum to Vasuki the head of serpents. Those afflicted by adverse effects of planets Rahu and Ketu, bathe in the sacred spring and pray to Lord for relief. Also those facing Brahmmahati dosha (sin of murders), sins following from the past birth, failure to perform prescribed ceremonies to ancestors, suffering from stomach pain, skin and mental problems also pray here for relief.

Special pujas are performed in the temple for relief from Kala Sarpa Dosha on payment of a fee of Rs. 1,500. Pujas are conducted in the temple on payment of a fee of Rs. 250 for those aspiring child boon, employment opportunity and wedding.

Temple History:
A debate about horses arose between Katru and Vinatha wives of Sage Kashyapa. Both were adamant in their stand. It was then decided that the loser should become the servant of the winner. Katru lost and became servants of Vinatha with her snake children. Vinatha’s son Garuda harassed the snakes. The serpents, headed by Vasuki came to a cave near the Kumaradara River and stayed there and prayed to Lord Shiva for relief and protection from Garuda.
Lord Shiva advised them to approach His Son Lord Muruga which they meticulously followed. Pleased with their prayers, Lord Muruga protected them. As a mark of their gratitude to Lord, Vasuki the leader of the snakes spread its heads and became an umbrella. The river is flowing in Karnataka. The temple is built on the banks of this river. The very name of the place itself is Subramanya. As the Lord is holding the Cock symbol banner, He is named Kukkuda Dwaja Kandaswami – (Kukkuda-cock, Dwaja-banner, Kandaswami-Muruga).
There is a cave near the temple named Pallus from where Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi grace the devotees.
