Kurunkutty Sastha Temple

Location : Parassala at Thiruvananthapuram

About The Temple :

Kurunkutty Shastha Temple is located at the eastern side of bus-depot owned by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation at Parasala. The deity was formerly known as Karim-kutty-chathan that later became Kurunkutty-chathan. Once there existed a wide kavu that housed this temple.

Shree-kovil is concrete-roofed and directed westwards. The image built of sand-stone is that of Dharma-Sastha which is surrounded by Ganapathy and Nagaraja and Naga-yakshi (at the north-east) and Easwara-kala-bhoothathan by the road-side near the depot.
The land where the depot is located and adjacent areas were formerly belonged to the sacred grove (kavu) attached to the temple.

Pooja is held two times a day; temple festivals are held for five days and the celebrations complete with Makara-vilakku. The Uthram star of the month of Painkuni (the birth-star of Ayyappa) is also celebrated with gaiety. Saturdays are special for this temple as it is believed that the deity has some impacts of ‘Shaneeswara’ who is responsible for the hardships of life; it is believed that by participating in the pooja dedicated for Shaneeswara one can turn the hardships of his life in to something bearable.
