Festival:

Chithirai Car festival on the first Tuesday of the month – April-May drawing devotees exceeding seven lakhs. Poo Choridal on the last Sunday of Masi –February-March and Vaikasi Panchaprakaram festival (May-June_ are celebrated very devotionally when the crowd would be in many lakhs. 11 day Thaipoosam in January-February is one of the great festivals celebrated. Also Tamil and English New Year days, Pongal and Deepavali are observed with special pujas. While usually the crowd is big in all days, it is particularly more on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Temple’s Speciality:

Goddess Mariamman undertakes a hunger fast on the last Sunday of the Tamil month Masi-February-March for 28 days for the welfare of all beings in the world. During this period, no solid nivedhanas are offered to the Goddess. Only tender coconut, orange juice, a flour called Thullu Mavu and grape juice are offered as Nivedhana in liquid form. She is showered with flowers during these days. This is known as Poo Choridal (Poo-flowers, choridal-showering).

The temple is opened from 5.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

General Information:

Those suffering from measles for a long time, come here and stay till they are cured, light Maavilakku (a lamp made of flour and Jaggery paste with ghee) and return back with their soul and mind left in the temple. They only physically go back.

Prayers:

The Goddess fulfils any aspiration of the devotee. Many, as a prayer commitment, stay here after cure from small pox and serve the temple before leaving.

The disabled and those with impaired vision pray to Mother Mariamman for reliefs. Devotees also pray for agricultural yields and business development.

Thanks giving:

Tonsuring, Archanas, Abishek are largely followed. Ear boring is undertaken here. Devotees pull the golden chariot, carry fire pots, punch their faces, roll round the temple, offer cradles made of sugarcane, light lamps made of flour and ghee for 15 days during Thaipoosam festival in January-February, offer paddy, donate grains, sheep, cocks as prayer commitments. They also feed the poor.

Greatness Of Temple:

This is one of the largest temples of the state earning high revenues for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment with huge inflow of devotees.

Thali the Mangal Sutra offered by women are the majority of the offerings in the Hundi of the temple. Diseases are cured without surgery in many cases.

Many devotees visit this temple from Karnataka, as Mariamman resembles the Chamundeeswari of Mysore. There is also a story that Emperor Dasaratha visited Samayapuram to worship Mariamman.

Mariamman Samayathil Kaappal – in Tamil). It is the faith of the people that Mariamman will protect them though they are far away from her in other places of the world.
