The temple is surrounded by Kollimalai, Alavaimalai, Nainamalai and Bodhamalai the four hills. During the Aipasi festival, Ambika is decorated with flowers known as Poochattu. Poo means flowers. It will be very auspicious to worship the Goddess during this festival. The Swambu Aamman is placed before her in the sanctum sanctorum. She is on a square seat called Avudayar in the Linga shape. Yali Vahana ( a lion-like vehicle also is there. On the Maham star day each month, special pujas are performed. In the hall (mandap) the feet of Devi is carved. This is known as Unjal Mandapam (Unjal- an oblong cradle). Women shake this unjal and hope that they will become mothers to place the child in cradles.

There is a shrine for Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga only. There are no shrines for other deities.

Temple History:

This was an agricultural land once. While a farmer was tilling the land, he found blood coming out of the soil. On digging, the farmers found an idol of Shakti. In Her invisible form She directed a devotee to build a temple there and thus this temple came into being. In the days followed, a Mariamman idol was also installed behind the Swayambu Ambika.

Generally, a pole is installed in front of the Mariamman shrine during festival times only, which people regard as the Lord of Devi and worship the pole. The speciality in this temple is that there is a permanent pole opposite the shrine. As Devi’s view is always set on the pole, women believe that worshipping Her will not bring them separation from their husbands and that would always enjoy the luck of living with their husbands as a blessed Sumnagali till their life end. Goddess also is named Nitya Sumangali.
