About The Temple :
The Palliyamburam Sree Mahadeva temple is situated 1 Y2 km away to the North of Sree Ramaswamy temple of Ramapuram, facing the Ramapuram -Koothattukuhim road.There are no manuscripts to show how ancient the temple is. This is one of the 108 Shiva temples of Kottayam dist. Here the idol is of Sree Parameshwara keeping the fierce form of Bhagawathy under control. The Moola Mantra is ‘panchakshari’.
The broken Shiva Linga has been covered by brass. The absence of idols of Upadevatas is the peculiarity of this temple. The Sree kovil is square, Darshanam (facing) is towards the east, the Kodimaram is made of copper. Daily 3 poojas are performed.The important festival is in the month of Kumbha. The festival flag is hoisted in such a way that the ‘Pallivetta’ is perfonned on the Shivarathri day.
Pradosha pooja is also perfonned. During the Karkitaka vavu ‘Pithru Tharpanam’ (pooja for the forefathers) is also conducted. During the rule of the kings, the temple was under the custody of local chieftains known as Sankara Mala Kaimals. Afterwards the temple came under the rule of Thamaramangalath Mana and later it was taken over by the Karanattu mana Namboodiris. During the time of Tipu Sulthans aggression, the temple was destroyed and the wealth looted.
The idol was destrotyed and the priest who embraced the idol was killed. The priest became a ‘Brahma Rakshas’ and on a special Mandapam, a lamp is lighted for him. when the Karanattu mana Namboodiris lost their wealth, they were unable to rebuild the destroyed temple and perfonn Prathishta. So they handed over the ownership to 190 number Nair karayogam. The Nair Karayogam reconstructed the temple and perfonned the ‘Punar Prathishta’ of the old shila lingam. The karayogam is incharge of the various activities of the temple and are the owners.
