Greatness Of Temple:

We have heard of curd rice, tamarind rice etc. being offered as Nivedhana to Perumal-Vishnu. In the Kovilur Chennakeswara Perumal tempal a pulse flower mixed with sugar is offered as Nivedhana. While there is no shrine for Bhairava in Vishnu temples, there is one here that too very near the presiding deity.

There is also a shrine for Lord Shiva. Anjaneya, in his shrine, appears with a sword and is worshipped as Veera Anjaneya. It is also a wonder in the temple that sometimes the idol of Lord Chennakeswara Perumal appears as Lord Narasimha. There are shrines for Sri Ramanuja, Vishwaksenar. Worshipping Lord Chennakeswara Perumal brings all benefits to the devotee.

As a divine voice – Devaprashna – said that the place of the temple was Rudrabhoomi where Mother Uma was seated, Shivalinga also is installed in the temple. Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi are with the procession deity. Special pujas for Sri Dharma Sastha, Navagrahas (9 planets) along with Tirumanjana Aradhana for Perumal with nivedhanas are performed on the English new year day.

Temple History:

During the 17th century, Kovilur was part of the Mysore Samasthan. The king of the state offered lands and materials to the temple known as Srothriam. Therefore, the place is also called Srothriam Kovilur. The Mysore kings were devotees of Lord Vishnu. They were rewarded with male progenies by the grace of Chennakeswara Perumal who is also regarded as the elder brother of Tirupathi Venkatachalapathy. Chennakesava Perumal is the family deity of many families here.
