About The Temple :
Divinity in its rarity is consecrated at this ancient temple and it enjoys a supreme position among the temple of Central Travancore. The temple is millennium old and its sanctorum with Garbhagraham is constructed in a square shape along with Namaskara mandap, Chuttambalam, circum-ambulatory, flag mast, minor temples, aannakottil etc.
The Legend – Centuries ago a wandering Brahmin came here. While taking rest under the banyan tree, he saw many children playing there. He took notice of a particular boy, who seemed to have a halo of divinity around him. After the play, the other boys returned to their homes, while this boy disappeared at the exact place where the temple stands now. The Brahmin realized that the boy was none other than Lord Vishnu and he prostrated at the feet of the Lord and requested to be blessed with eternal presence there. Later the Brahmin confided the matter to the local people and led the construction of the temple. The idol is a ‘Chathurbahu’ (with four hands) but devotees can have ‘darsan’ in the form of a child (Balakrishna) also.
Karkidakavavu – The new moon day of the month of ‘karkidakam’ has special significance at the temple. Balitharpanam are also conducted on new moon days of all Malayalam month. On the first Sundays of all months ‘Akhandanamajapam’ is being conducted and it is believed uttering the Lords name will help absolve all sins. Sarvaiswaryapooja is being conducted on the first. Thursdays of all months and it is believed to help overcome obstructions in marriage and also helps in educational prosperity. Astami Rohini, Vishu, Thiruonam etc are celebrated at the temple. The yearly festival ends with the thiru arattu (divine dip) on the Thiruonam day of the month ofVrichikam.
