This is the only temple in Kerala where the remedial religious rites for ‘Gandharva Doshas’ are done. Regarding the origin of the temple, there is a story. 700 years ago there lived a mother and son who were the disciples of a goddess in a village under the territory of Cochin King. One day a monk came to their house. To entertain the guest the family quickly took one tender coconut from the nearest coconut tree and gave it to the monk to drink. Later they found the coconut tree was not in their eligible land. They feared if the king knows about this they will be severely punished. Goddess they worship came in their dream on that night and told the son to go to Kodungalloor or he will be beheaded by the King. During the same night itself the mother and son started journey to north as per the goddess’ command through dream. After a long journey they reached Kodungalloor Temple when the Kodungalloor Devi was trembling in a possessed person. When they told their sad ‘story to the Devi, She advised them to go further north. They walked as per the command of Kodungalloor Devi and reached the place called Vazhappully and installed an idol and started worshiping and gradually known as Vazhappully Tharavadu.
Guru Muthappan who constructed the temple was a priest, celibate and great sagcl With a long period of prayer and poojas he strengthened the Devi. The Goddess in the temple was adored by the Aadi Muthappan and other old age persons who came from Cochin. In spite of Savarna Medhavithwam (privileges for the upper cast),.
