His life presents to us a living account of a person’s transformation from a pleasure-loving emperor who had everything at his disposal to a sage who gave us the immortal Shataka trilogy. Bhartruhari was fiercely enamoured of his newly-wedded wife Pingala, a fact which caused Vikramaditya considerable anguish for the elder brother neglected his kingly duties preferring to spend his life in her arms. ఖర్వాటో దివనేశ్వరస్య కిరణైః సంతాపితే మస్తకే
వాఞ్ఛన్దేశ మనాతపం విధివశా త్తాలస్య మూలం గతః,
తత్రావ్యస్య మహాఫలేన పతతా భగ్నం సశబ్దం శిరః;
ప్రాయో గచ్ఛతి యత్ర దైవహతకస్త త్త్రైవ యా న్త్యాపదః
తాత్పర్యం:
ఒకానోక బట్టతలవాడు, మిట్టమధ్యాహ్నపు సూర్యతాపాన్ని భరించలేక, అందులోను మరీ ముఖ్యంగా మాడుతున్న శిరస్సును కాపాడుకోదలచి దగ్గర్లో ఏ చెట్టునూ గానక తాటి చెట్టును చూశాడు. ఆ కొద్దిపాటి నీడలో తల దాచుకోదలచి దాని క్రిందకు చేరాడు.

అది వేసవికాలం కావడంతో మిగుల ముగ్గిన తాటిపండు ఒకటి దైవికంగా సరిగ్గా వాని తల మీద పడి, వెంటనే వాడికి కపాల మోక్షమైంది. అనగా – తలబ్రద్దలైనవి అని అర్థం. దైవబలం చాలకనే ఈ దుర్గతి వానికి దాపరించెను కదా !
చెట్టు నీడన తలదాచుకోదలచి చేరిన వాడికి, అదే ఆపదగా పరిణమించిన వైనం దైవలీల గాక ఏమి?

Vaanychandhesha Manaathapam Vidhivashaa Ththaalasya Moolam Gathah,
Thathraavyasya Mahaaphalena Pathathaa Bhagnam Sashabdham Shirah;
Praayo Gachchathi Yathra Dhaivahathakastha Ththraiva Yaa Nthyaapadhah
Meaning:
If the divine blessings donot favor a man, wherever he goes, he will face danger. An example can be given as follows. A man with bald head in a Midsummer Day sun runs under a palm tree for shelter from burning his head. If a palm fruit falls on his head and kills him on the spot, what else does one call it, than the divine intervention?
