Sri. Gollapudi Maruti Rao (Telugu: గొల్లపూడి మారుతీరావు)(born on 14th April, 1939) is an Indian film actor, theater actor, screenwriter, dramatist, playwright, and dialogue writer known for his works in Telugu Cinema, Theater arts and Telugu Literature. He was a member of the Script Scrutiny Committee of National Film Development Corporation and served as a Jury Member at International Film Festival of India for Indian Panorama section in 1996. He has garnered six Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Awards.
Early Life:
Gollapudi Maruthi Rao was born on 14th April, 1939 to Sri. Subba Rao and Smt. Annapoorna at Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh in a middle class family. His parents lived all their lives at Visakhapatnam. He had his education at C.B.M. High School, AVN college and and graduated from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in 1959 specializing in Mathematical Physics.
Career:
Maruthi Rao has strong interests from his school days were in writing. After a two year service on the editorial department of Andhra Prabha Daily News paper, he joined All India Radio (AIR), Government of India and worked at Hyderabad, Vijayawada and was promoted as Programme Executive and posted at Sambalpur. He later worked as Programme Executive at Chennai and Cuddapah. Maruthi Rao was promoted at Assistant Station Director and incharge of AIR, Cuddapah in 1981 for a total period of 19 years. He resigned the job after starting his acting career, before entering into a prolific career of films and continues his writing which started since his school days: News, Features, Interviews, Essays, Editorials, Short Stories, Playlets, Plays, Audio Pictures,Cine Stories, Cine Screen Plays, Cine Dialogues and TV Serial Writing etc.
In Film Industry:
The Play “Vandemaataram”, is the first Telugu play written on Chinese Aggression was produced, directed and presented by him at chittoor, Tirupathi, Madanapalle and Nagari. The proceeds for the performances were given to PM’s Defence fund. He wrote his first Script (Screenplay) for the film “Dr.Chakravarthi” in 1963. His first full length work (Story & Dialogues) received the 1st Nandi Award for Best Story Writing instituted by Andhra Pradesh state Government. Maruthi Rao wrote story, screenplay, dialogues for 87 films.
His first lead role as actor in Intlo Ramayya Veedhilo Krishnayya (1982) was a resounding success and he never looked back afterwards. He acted in over 230 movies as character actor, comedian and villain took part in film direction apart from his writing, directing and acting in plays. He conducted TV shows as an anchor. His noted literary works and plays, like Rendu Rellu Aaru, Patita, Karuninchani Devatalu, Mahanatudu, Kaalam Venakku Tirigindi, Aasayaalaku Sankellu, have won numerous State Awards.
Literary Works:
- Maruthi Rao’s first short story “Aaasa Jeevi” appeared in “Renadu”, a local paper from Proddapur on 9.12.1954. Maruthi Rao had his own theatre group called Raghava Kala Niketan during his school days.He produced, directed and acted the main lead in the plays Aadadi (Pinisetty), Kukkapilla Dorikindi, Swayamvaram (Ravi Kondala Rao), Reaharsals (Somanchi Yagnanna sastry), Vapas (D.V. Narasaraju), Mahanubhavulu (an adoption of Gogol’s “An Inspector Calls” by Somanchi Yagnanna sastry). Maruti Rao has written and published 9 plays, 18 playlets, 12 novels, 4 story volumes, 2 essays and 3 children’s stories.
- He wrote a weekly column “Jeevana Kaalam(The Living Times)” a kaleidoscopic study of contemporary social and political issues for over 24 years. It was a very popular feature in one of the largest circulated Telugu dailies of Andhra Pradesh (Andhra Jyothy) and, the feature continued to appear in Vaartha(Daily). His column along with an audio reading (his voice) continues in an internet magazine “Koumudi”.
- His autobiography Amma Kadupu Challaga, a 550-page compendium of his memoirs was released in India, USA and Australia. A travelogue Tanzania Teerthayatra was published by Koumudi in the USA in 2008 in its collection. It is based on 15-day safari with his friend Ganti Prasada Rao in the major national parks and historical places in Tanzania. The novel Pidikedu Aakaasham was released as an audio publication on 16 February 2009 while conferring the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Vanguri Foundation in Hyderabad.
Academic Impact of Works:
- Maruthi Rao’s works are subjects of study and research in Universities in India. A volume of essays on Theatre “Telugu Nataka Rangam” was prescribed as a text book for Department of Theatre Arts, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam (1967).
- His play ‘KALLU’ – prescribed as a text book for M.A. Students of Osmania University.
- Many researchers received their Ph.D and M.Phil. Degrees for their researches on Maruthi Rao’s works.
- He participated in many Seminars as keynote speaker. Two research articles appeared in “Andhra Vigyana Sarvaswam” (Telugu Encyclopedia) 11th Volume, namely: “History of the development in “Thought” and “Technique” of Telugu Play-writing” and Amateur Theatre – its origin and growth in relation to the World Amateur Theatre movement.
Personal life:
Maruthi Rao was married on 17th November, 1961 to Sivakama Sundari at Hanamkonda. She came from an illustrious family of scholars and musicians. Her father was a teacher to celebrities like Dr C.Narayana Reddy and Kaloji Narayana Rao. The couple blessed with three sons namely Subbarao, Ramakrishna and Srinivas.
Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Foundation:
Gollapudi Srinivas, was born on 3rd March, 1966 as the youngest child to Maruthi Rao couple. While directing his debut movie “Prema Pustakam”, succumbed to a water accident on 12th August, 1992. The Telugu film field lost a promising director and the Maruthi Rao family a close member of the family. The family established the Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Foundation to perpetuate the memory and instituted an annual cash award for the Best Debut Director chosen from among the Indian languages. As part of the event an eminent (film) personality gives the keynote lecture.

- Member of the Script Scrutiny Committee of National Film Development Corporation. Reviewer of films screened at the International Film Festival held in Madras (Chennai) in 1978 in English from All India Radio.

- Presided seminar on Arts and Culture in World Telugu Conference held at Visakhapatnam (December 8th, 2000).

- Invited Participant in the 5th Inter-university Youth Festival representing Andhra University in 1958 and enacted the play “Manastatvaalu”. The Festival was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
- Invited participant in the Group Counseling Programme of Madras University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau in 1976. The Chairman of the project was Padma Bhushan Dr. Malcolm S. Audiseshaiah.
